PDM website tips

How to get PDM news without getting more email, and other tips on using the website.

Using RSS to get the News

If you're using Firefox or Safari, your browser can notify you automatically when the PDM news page changes. Notice the little blue RSS icon on the page? That's the sign that you can subscribe to automatic updates.

RSS with Firefox

If you're using Firefox, click on the RSS icon and you'll see the option to subscribe. Check off the "Always use..." box, and click "Subscribe Now".

Next, Firefox will ask what to name your bookmark and where to save it. Name it "PDM news" and save it to your Bookmark Toolbar. You'll see a bookmark like this:

When you click on the bookmark, you'll see the latest news (and only the latest news!) from PDM.

Other browsers have different ways of handling RSS. Check their specific instructions.

Automatic calendar updates with iCal

Many calendar programs can automatically import to events posted on the PDM calendar. We support iCal and vCal, which can be used by Google Calendar, Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple's iCal and more.

In a nutshell, you need to tell your calendar program to subscribe to our calendar webpage, usually by creating a new, second calendar in your program.

First, change the calendar view to "View: Month" (click the link at the top left) so that the Export icon is visible at the top right.

iCal and Apple's iCalendar

If you're using Apple's iCalendar, you can add the calendar by just clicking on the export icon. This will launch iCalendar, which will prompt you with "Please select a destination calendar". The best choice is to select "New calendar". Done!

iCal and Thunderbird

If you're using Thunderbird, you have to manually create the new calendar and paste in the address of the PDM calendar.

First, Thunderbird will ask "On my computer" or "On the network". Select "On the network".

Next, you'll be asked which format. Select "iCal" and enter the location: http://www.progressivedemsofmass.org/events/icalendar.ics

Now, when you view your Thunderbird calendar, PDM events will be automatically displayed and kept current.
