Fake News and Freedom of the Press

The Make News Worthy group that was formed by a breakout group at our meeting on Feb. 1, has organized a terrific event on Fake News and Freedom of the Press. I hope you can join us!

It’s on Wed., May 3, at the Reading Public Library from 7:00 – 9:00. A flyer with more information is attached and information on the great speakers is below. They also have a follow-up program on May 17th with a representative from the ACLU that will discuss First Amendment Freedoms

The speakers on May 3rd are:

Melissa Zimdars is Assistant Professor of Communication and Media at Merrimack College. Here's a great article she wrote on her work helping students decipher reality from almost everything else in media: Washington Post  and a link to her project OpenSources which is a curated resource for assessing online information sources, available for public use.

Takis Metaxas is Professor of Computer Science at Wellesley College.  Here is a link to his project Twittertrails which developed an algorithm allowing journalists to investigate claims made on Twitter and determine whether they are likely true or false.

Dan Kennedy is Associate Professor of Journalism at Northeastern University and has so many other gigs it is hard to summarize! He writes books, articles, blogs, and regularly appears on WGBH's Beat the Press. This is his blog.

There will be a related program on May 17th at 7:00 at the Reading Library.  A representative from the ACLU will be at the library to discuss First Amendment Freedoms, so save the date. More information will be forthcoming.

I hope to see you on May 3! Thanks to the Make News Worthy group for planning this wonderful event!
